Economic empowerment and environmental preservation initiatives through developing fully-supportive sustainable coffee plant ecosystems, from development to operations, implemented with fair trade principles, which allows for capacity building for coffee farmers in South Sulawesi.

Economic Empowerment and Environmental Preservation in Latimojong, Luwu, South Sulawesi

Rampant poverty and forest destruction practices are sets of social and environmental problems we have observed in Latimojong, Luwu, South Sulawesi.

Residents of the remote mountainous area of Latimojong are depending on commodities such as coffee, cocoa, and cloves for their livelihoods. However, this endeavor could not provide them with the income that meets the standard of minimum income determined by the government of the South Sulawesi province.

On the other hand, there are many notable environmentally damaging practices in Latimojong. This includes unsustainable forest cleaning practices, the use and dependence of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides which ruin the soil, the hunt of protected animals and the pollution caused by plastic packaging waste.

Kinarya presents an economic empowerment and environmental preservation program, “Forest to Cups.” The program aims to develop the coffee plantation supply chain from upstream to downstream, while at the same time guarding the fair trade and environmentally friendly principles intact. It will start with coffee farmers’ communities development in the social forestry area in Latimojong, with sustainable farming practices that are able to provide a cup of coffee from the coffee beans that we are cultivating.

Forest to Cups aims to provide economic empowerment to Latimojong residents by improving the coffee beans’ quality and production capacities, investing in and training the coffee farmers’ professional development, and providing adequate production facilities and equipment. In addition, we are committed to preserve the environmental health of our site by using organic fertilizers to replace chemical fertilizers which could damage the soil, environmentally-friendly insect repellents, and the cultivation of shade trees to allow reforestation.

To realize our mission as a social enterprise, we are also committed to distribute a portion of our profits to be invested back for the people and the planet.

We Support These Sustainable Development Goals

No Poverty

Our economic empowerment program, Forest to Cups, will directly contribute to reducing local poverty. Through our sustainable coffee plant management system implemented with fair trade principles, our coffee farmers have opportunities to build their knowledge and capacity, establish their business and increase their profit and prosperity.

Zero Hunger

Local farmers who have a limited yearly income face the risk of hunger, as well as their family. Forest to Cups is determined to provide regular fair income for farmers to prevent the incidence of hunger.

Gender Quality

Forest to Cups’ opportunity and access are open for both men and women, and it also opens up room for economic empowerment and work opportunities for women.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

Through Forest to Cups programs, locals have the opportunities for decent work and fair income, which allows for a wider spread of economic growth.

Reduce Inequalities

With economic growth created through Forest to Cups, the program is hoped to indirectly contribute to reduced inequalities.

Sustainable Cities and Communication

Forest to Cups program will contribute to the establishment of Sustainable Cities and Communities through coffee plant management driven by sustainable principles, including building roads and bridges facilities for villages hosting the coffee plant areas.

Respondsible Consumption and Production

Coffee enterprise management driven by sustainable principles as implemented in the Forest to Cups program will directly contribute to foster responsible consumption and production.

Climate Action

Through coffee plantation management with sustainable principles as reflected in the Social Forestry concept, our forest ecosystem will remain preserved, free from tree logging activities, and enhanced with shade tree planting, which helps to produce more oxygen. This is an important effort in our climate action.

Life On Land

Forest to Cups implementation through sustainable Social Forestry will contribute to the preservation and restoration of land ecosystems, especially for the restoration and rehabilitation of degraded forests or land areas.

What They Say

Thank you Kinarya for helping to introduce coffee production from our village to enter national markets. We wish for Kinarya’s continued success to introduce coffee from more remote villages in Indonesia.
- Andi Ahmad Amiruddin (Coffee Farmer), 2022
I am grateful to know and befriend Kinarya as I had the chance to go to Jember to attend a coffee farming training with Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute. After I learned about coffee farming and processing, I am more emboldened to grow coffee farming in my village, Tibussan. I hope that our village can be more well-known with its coffee production, and the coffee beans from our village can become competitive and will be marketed to all around Indonesia.
- Haria (Coffee Farmer), 2022
I am grateful for Kinarya’s presence who has helped to develop and propel us to manage coffee farming in a better way. I am happy to be able to attend the training in Jember, so that I can know more about all the technical details on how to cultivate a coffee production farm. I hope that with Kinarya’s presence in Tibussan Village, residents can be more enthusiastic in cultivating coffee production.
- Ariyansyah (Coffee Farmer), 2022
Alhamdulillah, I am happy to work together with Kinarya, who is willing to buy 13 tonnes of our coffee beans, and I can help people around me by hiring 2 or 3 people in preparing Kinarya’s orders. Praise to God, the farmers who work with us from Boneposi, To’lajuk and Lambanan villages also feel helped. I hope that in the future the harvest of our coffee beans’ continue to excel and I will be ready to work again with Kinarya.
